iDEAL Wero: what changes for your webshop? October 2026 update

iDEAL Wero: what changes for your webshop? October 2026 update

If you run a Dutch webshop, many of your customers pay with iDEAL, the Dutch online bank payment method. That name is going away. iDEAL Wero is the in-between stage on the road to Wero, the European payment method of the European Payments Initiative (EPI). The next step of that switch starts in October 2026, which is right now.

This article covers what is fixed, what is not, and what you as a webshop owner actually need to do. In short: with a standard payment provider it is manageable, with a custom integration you have work to do.

iDEAL becomes Wero: what is going on?

EPI took over iDEAL in 2024. EPI is a joint venture of European banks and payment companies that is building one payment method for all of Europe: Wero. Wero already works in Belgium, Germany and France, among others. The Netherlands is next, and iDEAL will be absorbed into it.

For your customer, little changes: they still pay through their own bank. Behind the scenes, more is changing. Banks, payment providers and webshops have to convert their systems, and the iDEAL name will eventually disappear from your checkout.

The iDEAL Wero timeline: what is fixed as of October 2026?

In July 2026, EPI, the Dutch banks and the major payment providers jointly agreed the route for the rest of the switch. One thing moved: purchase protection was first planned for October 2026 and now arrives around the turn of 2027 into 2028. These are the dates as they stand:

  • Since 29 January 2026: the combined iDEAL | Wero logo in the checkout. Payment providers such as Stripe set 31 March 2026 as the deadline.
  • October 2026: all Dutch banks are connected to Wero. From now on, payments move to the Wero infrastructure step by step and the first webshops switch over through their payment provider.
  • Summer 2027: the first new Wero products are expected, such as payments for subscriptions.
  • 31 December 2027 at the latest: the switch is complete. That is the shared goal of banks and payment providers. After that, iDEAL is no longer in your checkout.
  • 1 January 2028: the goal is for purchase protection to apply everywhere by then. It is being rolled out in phases.

What does Wero change for your customers?

Very little, and that is the point. Your customer picks iDEAL | Wero at checkout and completes the payment in their own banking app. After that, features iDEAL never had are added step by step. Wero itself mentions subscriptions, refunds and buy now, pay later, among others. EPI also mentions pay on delivery and payments in physical stores.

The biggest change is purchase protection. If something goes wrong with an order, your customer first tries to resolve it with you. If that fails, their bank and your payment provider handle the dispute, and if they cannot agree, Wero decides under its own rules. For you, that means: keep proper records of delivery proof and customer contact, because customers will be able to dispute a payment.

Wero is also designed to work across borders. If you sell to customers in other Wero countries, that becomes interesting over time.

Wero in your webshop: what does your payment provider handle?

If you use a payment provider such as Mollie, Stripe, Buckaroo or MultiSafepay, they handle most of it. According to iDEAL itself, your payment provider takes care of the updates and the new logo. Stripe, for example, states that you do not need to do anything if you use their ready-made payment pages.

But not everything happens automatically. If you have a custom webshop with its own API integration, you update the logo and text yourself. And once Wero becomes available as a separate payment method, you may need to switch it on yourself, sometimes with a new contract. That differs per payment provider. MultiSafepay warns that you will no longer receive these payments if your payment provider does not support Wero.

One more tip if you are having a custom checkout built: do not build a bank selector. Since iDEAL 2.0, your customer no longer picks their bank in your checkout, but on iDEAL's own payment page. Payment providers asked webshops to remove that bank list by early 2025. If it is still in your shop, you are behind.

What does Wero cost your webshop?

For now, no more than iDEAL. EPI has committed that Wero scheme pricing will stay broadly at the current iDEAL | Wero level until 31 December 2028. What you actually pay per transaction is still set by your own payment provider.

After 2028, it is uncertain. Thuiswinkel.org, the Dutch e-commerce association, among others expects Wero to move from a fixed fee per payment to a percentage of the order value. How high that will be has not been decided. If your order values are high, keep an eye on this and check whether your contract lets your payment provider change its rates mid-term.

Checklist: what to sort out for your webshop now

No need to panic, but waiting until the end of 2027 is not a plan either. These are the steps, in order:

  1. Check that your checkout shows the iDEAL | Wero logo and name. Also look at your confirmation emails, your footer and your payment information page.
  2. Update your payment plugin, for example in WooCommerce, and then make a test payment.
  3. Ask your payment provider when you can switch on Wero and whether that comes with a new contract or rate.
  4. Do you have your own API integration? Plan the changes: logo, text, Wero as a payment method and a test of your webhooks and return pages. Remove any bank selector.
  5. Prepare for purchase protection: keep the tracking code, proof of delivery and customer contact for every order.

How I approach it

If your webshop is on a maintenance plan with me, I include this in the regular updates: update the plugin, test the checkout, done. If you have a custom integration, you get a fixed quote upfront for the changes, so you know where you stand.

Just starting out, or want a new shop where this is right from day one? Read how I approach webshop development or check the pricing: webshops from €1,795, always with a fixed quote upfront. Questions? Send them via contact and I will reply within 1 working day.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is iDEAL Wero?

iDEAL | Wero is the in-between stage from iDEAL to Wero, the European payment method of EPI. The combined logo has been in checkouts since early 2026, and the switch to Wero should be complete by the end of 2027 at the latest.

When will iDEAL disappear?

Banks and payment providers share the goal of completing the switch by 31 December 2027 at the latest. After that, iDEAL is no longer in the checkout and customers pay with Wero.

When can I offer Wero in my webshop?

In October 2026 all Dutch banks are connected and the first webshops switch over through their payment provider. Whether you can switch yet depends on your payment provider, so ask them.

Do I need to do anything for Wero as a webshop?

With a payment provider such as Mollie or Stripe, they handle most of it. If you have your own API integration, you update the logo and text yourself and will switch Wero on yourself later. A bank selector in your checkout has not belonged there since iDEAL 2.0.

Is Wero more expensive than iDEAL?

Not for now. EPI has committed that Wero scheme pricing will stay broadly at the current iDEAL | Wero level until 31 December 2028. What happens after that is not yet decided, and your own rate is set by your payment provider.

Is Wero a new payment method?

Yes. Wero is EPI's European payment method that replaces iDEAL. Your customer still pays through their own bank, but gets new features such as purchase protection (with full coverage targeted for 1 January 2028) and payments for subscriptions.
