Building your website in WordPress: why (and when not to)

Building your website in WordPress: why (and when not to)

WordPress powers a large share of all websites in the world. Not because it's a hype, but because for most businesses it's simply the most practical foundation.

Still, it isn't always the right choice. In this article you'll read why I build most websites in WordPress, and in which cases something else fits better.

Why WordPress?

You manage your site yourself. Changing copy, adding a page or swapping a photo works without needing a developer or paying per change. That saves a lot of money and hassle in the long run.

On top of that, WordPress is flexible and easy for Google to find. The structure is clear, you can build almost anything with it, and you're not tied to one vendor. Your site is yours and you can take it with you.

Who is WordPress the best choice for?

For most entrepreneurs and SMEs that want a professional website or webshop they can partly manage themselves. Think of a service provider, a local business, a brand with a story, or a webshop on WooCommerce.

It works best when the site is built custom instead of a standard theme you bend your process around. Then you get the ease of WordPress with a design that is truly yours. That's how I build custom websites.

When is something else the better choice?

WordPress isn't the answer to everything. If you're building a complex web application with lots of custom logic, a platform with accounts and real-time data, or a product where the technology is the heart, custom software is often the better fit.

Not sure what fits your plan? Run it by me. Send a message with what you want to achieve, and I'll tell you honestly whether WordPress is the best route or not.
